We are really sorry this is happening to you. Let’s slow down and take a breath. First thing, are you safe right now?
- Ensure your immediate safety: If you’re in immediate danger, try to remove yourself from the situation and find a safe place. This may involve going to a friend’s or family member’s house, a shelter, or contacting the police.
- Seek support: Reach out to someone you trust, such as a close friend, family member or a therapist if you have one, and let them know about the situation. Follow your instincts and do not let anyone dismiss your concerns.

- Create a safety plan: Develop a safety plan that includes strategies for different scenarios, such as when violence occurs, when you decide to leave, or when you need to seek help. This plan should take into account your specific circumstances and may involve having a packed bag ready with essential items, remembering emergency contact numbers, and identifying a safe place to go.
- Contact helplines and support organisations: In the UK, you can contact organisations such as the National Domestic Violence Helpline at 0808 2000 247 or Women’s Aid for support, advice, and guidance. They can provide you with resources, information about your rights, and assistance in finding a safe place to stay.
- Consult a professional: if you are going to invest in therapy then make sure the professional is a specialist in coercive behaviours and domestic violence dynamics. They can help you process your experiences, explore your options, and provide guidance on how to navigate the situation.
- Report the violence: If you feel safe and comfortable doing so, consider reporting the violence to the police. They can provide protection, investigate the situation, and potentially take legal action against your partner.
